The rise in civil aviation, saw a decline in demand and so she was converted to an educational cruise ship in the late 1960s, when her cargo holds were changed into dormitory cabins. She then sailed in Scandinavia and the Mediterranean up until 1982, when she was used by the Royal Navy as a hospital ship in the Falklands War.
