Pennies adorn the headstone of the grave of Dred Scott, the American slave who sued for his freedom in the years preceding the American Civil War, photographed in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri USA Sunday, June 14, 2020. The lawsuit, Dred Scott v. Sandford, commonly known as the Dred Scott decision, was decided in 1857 and ruled that at the time US citizenship did not apply to Black Americans, regardless of whether they were slaved or free. Decided 7-2, the decision was written by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, and was a factor in the American Civil War. Tradition holds that visitors to Scott’s grave leave pennies, which have the likeness of US President Abraham Lincoln, who’s Emancipation Proclamation led to the end of US slavery.
