Perichondritis ear infection. Inflamed outer ear of a 61-year-old man suffering from perichondritis. This is a bacterial infection (usually with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa) of the perichondrium, the tissue that surrounds the stiff cartilage in the ear. It usually follows a trauma (injury) to the ear or ear piercing, and results in a painful, swollen ear. Treatment is with antibiotics. In severe cases fluid may need to be drained from the ear surgically.
