Polyana usually is packed with tourists because of the surrounding natural beauty, ski slopes and thermal waters, it became safe haven for many Ukrainians displaced by the war. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many refugees look for shelter in the Zakarpattia region, one of the poorest regions in the country that now receives around 15, 000 people daily from other parts of Ukraine. Local authorities, together with business and civil society are working together to ensure that the people fleeing the war feel as much comfortable and welcome as possible. In addition to over 5 million refugees who have left the country, the number of internally displaced Ukrainians escaping from combat zones in the north and south has surpassed 8 million.
