More information:

Psoriasis on the skin of a 39-year-old man suffering from discoid, or plaque, psoriasis. The skin in the plaques appears inflamed and flaky. Psoriasis occurs when new skin cells are produced around ten times faster than normal. While the skin is not normally itchy, large areas of the body, including the trunk, limbs and scalp, may be affected. The disease may also be associated with joint stiffness and inflammation (arthritis). Although the underlying cause is not known, psoriasis often runs in families and can be brought on by stress, skin damage and illness. The condition can be relieved with ultraviolet light, a soothing emollient or corticosteroid drugs.
