At the beginning of Federal control he was, on the re-quest i>f the director general, assigned by the commissionto take charge of equipment matters for the railroad ad-ministration, and on July 1. 1918, he was directed by thedirector general to resign his position as chief inspectorand to devote all of his time to the work of the railroadadministration in the capacity of assistant director of op-eration in charge of mechanical matters.
