March, 1916. RAILWAY AND LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING. 83 w. 0 o 0 0 0 o c^-*- ^ -- <Qi DETAILS OF BAKER VALVE GEAR—INSIDE ADMISSION. The ratio of change on Baker gear is 4to 1; on Walschaerts gear ratio is (valvetravel divided into diameter of circle ofeccentric; example, Valve travel is 6inches, diameter 18 inches. Ratio 3 to 1)3 to 1. Prove engine by catching on each cen-ter in both directions. Place reverse barin 10th notch of quadrant in forward mo-tion, roll wheels forward. When trampoints are on line of valve opening, stoprolling and measure distance betweencross-head and travel, mark on guide, marking this distance down some con-venient place, doing this on all points ofboth forward and backward motion. Ifforward motion on right side totals 36inches (that is if back end is 19 inchesand front end 17 inches) and left sidetotals 34 inches, this should be correctedby lengthening the short reach rod on Baker gear, or by lengthening radius barhanger on Walschaerts gear on left sideor by shortening short reach rod onBaker gear and shorteni
