RM2D8DBRC–1903 - Electricity replaces steam on the Metropolitan underground and overground London train lines. Official photograph of the first of the new trains built by Brush Traction. Two prototype trains were tested in 1903, and soon after electric multiple units were ordered to replace the steam locomotives and carriages. By the end of 1905 all passenger services were using electric rather than steam trains. In 1923 steel cars were bought to replace some of the early wooden units and by 1926 all wooden carriages had been replaced.

RM2D4P659–1924 brought the introduction in Britain of new electric coaches on the city and south london railway (news image). The City and South London Railway (C&SLR) was the first deep-level underground 'tube' railway in the world, and the first major railway to use electric power. Though originally intended for cable-hauled trains, the cable contractor went bankrupt during construction, and electric power was used instead. When opened in 1890, the railway line operated 6 stations & ran for just over three miles. The small carriages with leather seats were nicknamed 'Padded Cells' by the public.
