Sampson, born February 9, 1840, was known for his victory in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, which was fought during Spanish-American War. Sampson emerged victorious from that battle which helped lead to the eventual devastation of the Spanish Navy’s Squadron located near the Caribbean Islands.
