Captain Atherton lay in a semi-conscious condition;the enemy had commenced to carry ofi our wounded, but 460. capt. arlon s. atherton. IMPORTANT RESULTS OF THE BATTLE OF DEEP BOTTOM failed to give him any attention- There was a rebel sur-geon near; the captain aroused himself and made a Ma-sonic sign which the surgeon recognized and went to him. He relieved the Captain temporarily by washing outhis mouth and throat and then called upon two of his menwho carried him to a tree, and placed him up-on the ground in its shade. Ahen this officerleft him he gave the Captain to understand thathe would return for him, Init night came on without fur-ther help, and through two days and nights he lay with-out attention, in unspeakable agony, but unconscious, hethought, part of the time; breathing was possible onlyby lying upon his side that the blood should escape fromhim mouth. In the early morning of the third day, hav-ing laid for an indefinite time in a dazed condition, heopened his eyes, and kneeling beside him was a smallboy some eight or nine years of age, poorly clad, but withan intelligent face.
