Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, UK. 12th February, 2023. A beautiful moment of a pair of mute swans mating on the Grand Union Canal. After their mating, the male swan on the left called a cob and the female swan on the right called a pen, hold their necks together forming a beautiful heart shape. This mating ritual is called necking. Swans mate for life and the female lays her eggs in late April, early May each year. Sadly some eggs are illegally stolen by people and if the cygnets are born, they can often be killed by dogs off leads, mink, foxes and other predators. Credit: Maureen McLean
