Ujung Kulon National Park, West Java, IndonesiaMore information:
Ujung Kulon National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located on the extreme south-western tip of Java on the Sunda Strait, and includes the Ujung Kulon peninsula and several offshore islands including the Krakatoa volcano. It contains the largest remaining area of lowland rain forests in the Java plain and has several species of endangered plants and animals, including the Javan rhinoceros. The explosion of nearby Krakatau in 1883 produced a tsunami that wiped out the the settlements on the Ujung Kulon peninsula, which resulted in it becoming a repository for much of Java’s flora and fauna, and most of the remaining lowland forest on the highly populated island of Java. This photo shows the banks of a small river that runs through the peninsula, giving access to the lowland rainforest.
