Castle Goldrain in Middle Vinschgau, South Tyrol was the ancestral home of the Hendl family from as far back as 15th Century. After the invasion in WWII by the German Wehrmacht in September 1943, it was used as accommodation and a military base for the SS. After the war, the allied powers set up camp. Thereafter, people returning to their country and refugees found their first rest and accommodation in the castle rooms. It is now an educational centre and surrounded by apple agriculture and vineyards.
