Sedimentary structures in sand beds, lacquer profile. Cross section of sand and gravel deposited during the Holocene period (11, 400 years ago to the present day). Since the sediment was deposited in a shallow marine environment, there are intricate cross-bedding patterns caused by changes in flow direction and ripples. A lacquer profile is created by immersing a vertical rock section inlacquer, which is then removed after hardening to reveal patterns and textures in the rock. The section measures over 1 metre high.
