RM2HBEHRY–An old engraving of the hydraulic boat repair lift or graving dock on the River Thames, London, England, UK c. 1860. It is from a book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. Edwin Clark (1814 –1894) was an English civil engineer, specialising in hydraulics. He is remembered principally as the designer of the Anderton Boat Lift (1875) near Northwich in Cheshire. In 1857 Clark became Engineer to the Thames Graving Dock Limited, for which he designed a graving dock in which the ships were lifted from the water by hydraulic presses enabling work on the hull to be carried out.
