The signals travel between the eyes, the thalamus (orange), the hippocampus (red), the occipital lobe (blue) and the temporal lobe (dark red). It is thought that short-term memory is stored in neurons in the hippocampus region, but that this memory is later transferred to other areas of the brain. Eventually, a single neuron can be responsible for a single long-term memory (graph at upper right).
