Sir Isaac Newton's house, London, (20th century). Newton's (1642-1727) house on the corner of Orange and St Martin's Streets was pulled down in 1914. English scientist and mathematician Isaac Newton's discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought. His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705, Newton is buried in Westminster Abbey, London.

Newton FRS PRS (1642-1726/27) was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time, and a key figure in the scientific revolution. In his book 'Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy', first published in 1687, Newton formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation, the laws of planetary motion, account for tides, the trajectories of comets, the precession of the equinoxes and other phenomena.
