Earlier today a flotilla of small boats including the RNLI All Weather lifeboat Diamond Jubilee sailed from Eastbourne's Sovereign Harbour to the Sovereign lighthouse just 11km off shore. The once manned lighthouse was commissioned in 1971 serving mariners for over 50 years. Lighthouse men left the platform in 1994 following its automation.
