Spinal surgery scar and staples on the back a 56-year-old man's neck. This is 10 days after foramenectomy for root canal stenosis, performed at the C6/7 vertebral level. Root canal stenosis is where a spinal nerve root is constricted by narrowing of the foramen (hole) by which it leaves the spine. This can be caused by injury, or a condition such as a slipped disc. A foramenectomy is performed to enlarge the foramen and free the nerve. A trapped nerve can cause shooting pains and even paralysis. C6 and C7 are the sixth and seventh vertebrae (spinal bones) in the neck.
