Stanislaw II August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. He ascended the Polish throne in 1764 after a Russian-Prussian agreement, supported by his former lover, Catherine II. At the first partition of Poland in 1772, large parts of his country were annexed to Russia, Prussia and Austria. His profound reform plans could not save the remaining Poland from the second and third partition of Poland (1793-95). This painting of the King was made by Angelika Kaufmann and hangs in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
