Statue of Olympic athlete Steve Ovett framed by Brighton Pier and the setting sun. Stephen Michael James "Steve" Ovett OBE (born in Brighton on October 9, 1955): former middle distance runnerand gold medalist in the 800 metres at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow set world records for 1500 metres and the mile run. The Steve Ovett bronze statue was erected on Brighton seafront near the pier to celebrate the 2012 Games. It replaced one stolen from Preston Park. Brighton-based artist Peter Webster made the new statue based on the remaining pieces from the original, which is believed to have been sold as scrap.
