Sir Walter Ralegh (1554–1618) Sir Walter is probably best remembered for laying his cape down across a puddle so that Queen Elizabeth 1. would not get her feet wet. Here in Greenwich his statue stands outside what was Greenwich Maritime Museum During his own lifetime, Walter Ralegh was one of the best-known men in England. He was a courtier, politician, soldier, seaman, explorer, businessman, philosopher, historian and poet. Although nowadays his name is often spelt 'Raleigh’, he seems never to have used this version himself. Riverside Pub Thames Reach Gary Blake Photomarine
