Steam engines, a thorough and practical presentation of modern steam engine practice . or space of a simple engine of the same power; and thecompounding reduces its, steam consumption considerably belowthat of a plain slide valve engine. Uniflow Steam Engine. A type of engine which has a veryextensive use in Europe, and which is just beginning to be manu- 42 STEAM ENGINES factured in this country is the Uniflow engine. Mr. L. J. Todd, in1886, took out patents in England covering the principle of theUniflow engine, but Professor Stumpf of Charlottenburg, Germany, deserves credit for developing the engine and for making it a prac-tical success. In Europe the high cost of fuel makes even smalleconomies in the use of steam of considerable value. The Uniflowengine was designed to secure better economy in the use of steamthan is possible with other steam engines of equal power. As usedin Europe, the poppet type of valve is almost universally employed, because of the better results it gives with superheated steam, which is used practically to the exclusion of saturated steam. SectioQal View of Uniflow EngineCourtesy of N&rdberg Manufacturing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Uniflow engine is now manufactured in the United States by a fewconcerns, the Nordberg Company being one of the first to developand build a successful engine of this type in this country. Method of Action of Nordberg Engine. A cross-section view ofthe Uniflow engine as manufactured by the Nordberg ManufacturingCompany is shown in Fig. 30. Steam comes to the engine throughthe inlet S and is led through the passages shown to either admissionvalve A. These valves are of the Corliss type, not only to conformwith American practice, but because, with saturated steam, they giveas good results as the poppet type and are less expensive to construct. The steam is exhausted through a ring of ports cast in the middle ofthe cylinder and is conducted away by the exhaust pipe shown below.
