Stephenson's 1815 locomotive. This early steam locomotive was built in around 1815 by the British engineer George Stephenson (1781-1848). It was based on the 1813 'Puffing Billy' design by British engineer William Hedley, but was lighter as the amount of metal used was reduced. Stephenson's first locomotive design was built in 1814, and he produced around 16 in total, though no definitive list exists. His most famous locomotive was the 'Rocket', built in 1829. Artwork from the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
