In 2018 WSDOT contractor crews from Granite Construction put a new surface on SR 20 between Sedro-Woolley and Concrete. The new surface is put down over the existing road (once road repair and crack sealing is done) to help protect the road from weather and traffic wear-and-tear. This work is much less expensive than paving and extends the life of the current pavement however, unlike paving, it does not create a new pavement surface for drivers, just coats the surface that is already there.
