The siege of Tyre by Alexander the Great in 332 BC. Tyre was a strategic coastal base on the Mediterranean Sea, it was on an island and had walls right up to the sea and was almost impossible to capture. Alexander solved the problem by first blockading and besieging Tyre for seven months, and then by building a causeway that allowed him to breach the fortifications. After the painting by Ernest Prater, (1864-1950). From Hutchinson's History of the Nations, published 1915.
