The Romaria de Nossa Senhora d'Agonia is one of Portugal's most vibrant and traditional summer festivals. Held over a four-day period in August in the northern Portuguese city of Viana do Castelo, the annual celebrations conclude with the Procissão do Mar (Procession of the Sea) when a statue of the Virgin Mary is hoisted onto the deck of a fishing trawler festooned with colourful flowers and flags and taken around the mouth of the estuary as part of a flotilla of similarly decorated watercraft. The event pays tribute to the city's mariners and fishermen.
