Overlooking the river Tagus on Lisbon's Belem waterfront and conceived by Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) is a massive 52 metre-high construction partially in the shape of the prow of a ship The monument commerates the Portuguese explorers including who took part in the age of discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries. The lead figure on the prow reperesents Prince Henry the Navigator.
