The Holly Blue is a small to medium sized butterfly with a wingspan of about 35mm. The male and female are similar and often confused even in reference books. Tis is a male with thin, black, upper wing edge markings, the female has larger, black, edge shading on the upper wings. The Holly Blue flies in two batches or broods. The first in April and May and the second in July and August. It is found throughout the south of England and is associated with holly and ivy. It also has localised populations elsewhere in England, Scotland and Wales.
