A manned orbital maintenance platform (OMP) approaches NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory for repair and upgrade. Chandra is a space-based X-ray telescope that was launched in 1999 and occupies an elliptical, 64-hour orbit that takes it up to 83, 000 miles from the Earth, one third of the way to the Moon, far beyond the orbits of geostationary satellites and far higher than the space shuttle could ever reach.
