New Zealand's Department of Conservation is running a takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) rearing program at Burwood Bush.This is a flightless bird indigenous to New Zealand and feeding on the abandoned Tussock Grass. It was thought to be extinct at the end of the 19th century but rediscovered in 1948. Here a nest with a Takahe egg. In der Burwood Bush Station züchtet die Naturschutzbehörde Neuseelands den Südinsel-Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri). Das ist ein flugunfähiger Vogel aus der Familie der Rallen, der nur in Neuseeland vorkommt und sich von Tussock-Gras ernährt. Forscher hielten die Art am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts für ausgestorben, 1948 wurde sie jedoch wieder entdeckt.
