A Patrician Tournament in 16th Century Rome, Italy. They were originally a group of ruling class families in ancient Rome when the city's social structure gave the patricians more political power than the plebeians. After the Western Empire fell, the term "patrician" continued as a high honorary title in the Byzantine Empire. In the Holy Roman Empire and many medieval Italian republics, patrician classes were formally defined groups of leading Grand Burgher families, especially in Venice and Genoa.
