RM2AF86YK–A guided boat trip along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto is one of most popular tourist excursions on Kauai Island in Hawaii, USA. The destination is a lava rock cavern that features long green kupukupu ferns hanging from above. Nowadays the fern display is not as awesome as in this 1980 photograph because many of the lengthy plants were torn away from the rocky grotto during Hurricane Iniki in 1992. In addition, heavy rains in 2006 caused rocks and plants to fall from the grotto's ceiling. Unlike the tourists seen here, visitors are no longer permitted inside the grotto for safety reasons
