More information:

Amy Johnson Aviator joined the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1940 and flew RAF aircraft delivering them to various UK destinations. She obtained the rank of First Officer equivalent to an RAF Flight Lieutenant. On 5th January 1941 she was flying an Airspeed Oxford in adverse weather conditions when she ditched it in the Thames Estuary. There are conflicting accounts of the circumstances. She was the first ATA person to be killed on active service. As her body was not recovered her name is inscribed with 20, 000 other air forces personnel without a known grave at the Air Forces Memorial in Runnymede England. The Memorial is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
