An advert for the Army Benevolent Fund - it appeared in a magazine published in the UK in 1946. Army Benevolent Fund (or ABF The Soldiers' Charity) is the National Charity of the British Army and provides financial and practical support to soldiers, veterans, and their immediate family in times of need, even after they have left the Army. It was founded in 1944 as The Army Benevolent Fund. Its first patron was His Majesty King George VI. The demobilisation (demob) of soldiers after the two World Wars had put an enormous strain on charitable funds and highlighted the need for a national charity to give practical help to soldiers and veterans. In January 2010 the Army Benevolent Fund was rebranded as ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. It works with veterans from every conflict since the Second World War – vintage 1940s graphics for editorial use only.
