August 3, 2015 - Infamous Eldfell volcano, over 200 m (660 ft) high, overlooking Heimaey port on Heimaey Island, in the Westman Islands archipelago group (Vestmannaeyjar), scattered off the south coast of Iceland. In 1973, without warning, lava flow and volcanic ash, from its violent eruption destroyed half the town and threatened to close the harbor, its main income source. Dependent on its fishing industry, but noted for its seabird population, tourism and bird watching are a growing sector of the economy of Heimaey as Iceland becomes a favorite tourist destination.
