The Australian Shepard is attentive, animated, and an intelligent working dog with strong herding and guarding instincts. He has a coat of moderate length and a natural bobbed tail. Aussies are intelligent working dogs with strong herding and guarding instincts. Originally from the Basque region of Spain, these working dogs were taken to Australia where herding methods were not seasonal so they were taken to America and were called Australian Shepherds or little blue dogs. In 1993 the Australian Shepherd was accepted into the herding group of the American Kennel Club.
