andlt;strongandgt;Blood clot.andlt;/strongandgt; Coloured scanning electronmicrograph (SEM) of a blood clot. The red bloodcells (erythrocytes) are trapped in filaments offibrin protein (grey). Also trapped is a singlewhite blood cell (lymphocyte, yellow). Bloodclotting is the solidification of blood thatoccurs when blood vessels are damaged. This damageactivates blood cells called platelets (not seen), which in turn help to stimulate the formation offibrin filaments at the site of injury. Thesefilaments enmesh platelets, and red andamp;amp; white bloodcells, contracting around them to form a solidclot. Inappropriate clotting is a major cause ofstrokes and heart attacks.
