The First World War brought about the first need for mass-produced gas masks on both sides because of extensive use of chemical weapons. The German army used poison gas for the first time against Allied troops at the Second Battle of Ypres, Belgium on 22 April 1915. As an immediate response was cotton wool wrapped in muslin issued to the troops by 1 May. This was followed by the Black Veil Respirator, a cotton pad soaked in an absorblater ent solution which was secured over the mouth using black cotton veiling.

During the First World War, the Second Battle of Ypres was fought from 22 April – 25 May 1915 for control of the tactically important high ground to the east and south of the Flemish town of Ypres in western Belgium. The First Battle of Ypres had been fought the previous autumn. The Second Battle of Ypres was the first mass use by Germany of poison gas on the Western Front.

RM2B00WJ6–Vietnam: Annamese 'tirailleurs' or Vietnamese colonial soldiers waiting to go into battle at Ypres, Belgium, in 1916. Ypres occupied a strategic position during World War I because it stood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across the rest of Belgium and into France. In the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April to 25 May 1915), the Germans used poison gas for the first time on the Western Front (they had used it earlier at the Battle of Bolimov on 3 January 1915) and captured high ground east of the town. The first gas attack occurred against Canadian, British, and French soldiers.

RM2A8R2GF–Stretcher bearers carrying a wounded soldier near the small Flanders village of Boesinghe (now Boezinge). Situated north of Ypres, fighting came to the area in April 1915. French forces, dug in near the village, and the front lines were stabilised for the next two years. The British arrived in June, and regiment after regiment passed through this sector of the battlefield until the ground was cleared in the opening phase of Third Ypres in July 1917.
