The Short Sunderland "Hythe" was a variation of the successful flying boat, that had unparalleled passenger comfort on long-haul flights. and the "C" Class flew the route between Durban, Lake Victoia Nyamga, Cairo and Calcutta, known as the "horse-shoe'.

These aircraft flew the luxury overseas routes of Imperial Airways and were the forerunners of the Sutherland Flying Boats. The Short Bros. Aircraft Works were based at this spot from 1913 until in 1947, having suffered heavily from war damage.
