Small pelican found in the Americas. Smallest of the 8 pelican species. It is still a large bird. Length 106-137 cm/ 42-54 inches. Weight 2.75-5.5 Kg/ 6.1-12.1 lbs. Wing span 1.8-2.5 m/ 6.0-8.2 feet. White head that gets gradually yellowish in adulthood. It has a grayish bill but in breeding season the ventral throat area becomes reddish. The back, rump and tail are streaked with gray and dark brown. The adult breast and belly are blackish-brown and the legs and feet are black. The bill is approximately 12 inches long. Located along Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to Venezuela. In the Pacific it is located from British Columbia down to South central Chili. It is most populous in Gulf Coast area. Very common in Mangrove swamp areas. Eats mainly fish especially Menhaden which accounts for most of its diet. Anchovy is important during the nesting season.
