Aug. 27, 2015 - Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina - The Matanza River is a 64km stream in Argentina that originates in the Buenos Aires Province and defines the southern boundary of the Buenos Aires federal district, where it's called Riachuelo. It's the most contaminated river in Argentina, ranking among the 30 most polluted basins in the world, and it also holds the highest population density in the country. Of the around 7 million people living along the drainage basin, 2 million are endangered by the lack of proper sewage system and potable water and the industrial waste illegally dumped by the many industries along the course of the river. The City of Buenos Aires, the Province and the Federal Government are implementing plans to relocate the slums that grow in the riverside, while working on containing and cleaning the garbage thrown by the city to the river.
