Burnt out cars in the sidings of Oxenholme station near Kendal. Hundreds of rail passengers had to put up with delays and cancellations after a freight train carrying motor cars caught fire on a main London to Scotland line. One London-bound sleeper train was three hours late arriving and another was nearly two hours delayed. The West Coast Main Line was shut for several hours and a number of First North Western trains were cancelled. The fire was on an EWS freight train taking Citroen and Peugeot cars from Washwood Heath near Birmingham to Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland.
