The traditional sport of camel wrestling is popular throughout western Turkey in the winter months. The largest event is the annual festival held in Selcuk, on the third weekend of January. The matches involve putting together two bull (male) camels with a female camel on heat nearby. The camels fight it out for the female, leaning on each other and wrestling to push the other to the ground down. The sport is most common in the Aegean region of Turkey, but is also found in the Marmara and Mediterranean regions of the country.
