Carnivorous Yellow or Common Butterwort in flower Pinguicula vulgaris Northern Michigan USA by Carol Dembinsky Dembinsky Photo Associates www.dpaphoto.com This passive carnivorous plant traps occur around the world. Like all Butterwort species, the plant utilizes sticky gladular leaves to attract, trap ( like flypaper ), and eventually digest the insect to gain important nutrients that are unavailable in its native soil ( nitrogen and phosphorus). This particular species thrives in a variety of habitats and ecological niches including but not limited to seepage bogs, beach bogs, and marl fens. It occurs through northern North America from coast to Coast, including Greenland and Labrador.
