Cebu City, Philippines, Good-Friday, 6.April 2012: Actress playing Mary Magdalene as Gilbert Bargayo is being nailed to the cross for the 17th Good Friday, with six-inch nails, in Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City. The nails he uses in his “crucifixion” are special: the tips are very sharp to lessen the damage on his hands and feet where they are actually driven in. Bargayo has a team who works with him when he does his staging. The man who nails him to the cross works with him closely to make sure the nails are driven in at the right spots. He also has an emergency team who treats him when he is taken down. The Catholic Church frowns on crucifixions as a means of sacrfice. Bargayo does it anyway as penance as well as to raise funds for a chapel he wants to build.
