JiuzHaiGou ("Nine Stockades Valley" - referring to the Tibetan villages to be found in the area) is a scenic nature reserve in Songpan County in the northwest of the Sichuan Province of China, about 450km northwest of the provincial capital, Chengdu. The remote National Park was opened in 1978 and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. It consists of many incredibly clear blue-green lakes, waterfalls and forests surrounded by high peaks. The park has been highly adapted for the big crowds of mainly Chinese tourists who visit each day. Vehicles are not permitted but a huge fleet of buses ferries visitors around. JMH3579
