More information:

In this photograph, dating to 1900, Chinese merchants sell tea to a commission house. The tea was shipped on steamboats down the Yangtsze River to Shanghai. Canton and Hong Kong were also great tea shipping ports at the time. Here, the man standing in the rear (hands in pockets) and the one second from right (with paper in hand) are employees of the shipping firm. They are checking up on the cases as the workers carrying the cases take them out, two at a time. The workers were paid by the piece—averaging, if they were lucky, 25 cents a day for loading and unloading tea.
