Founded July 16, 1769, Mission San Diego de Acala was the first of a string of 21 Spanish colonial missions built along the California coast. The last and furthest north was Mission San Francisco Solano, founded July 4, 1823 in the city of Sonoma, about 30 miles north of San Francisco.
