The fifth debate was held at Galesburg, Illinois on October 7, 1858, where the students of Knox College hung out a huge banner bearing the words: "Knox College for Lincoln." The Lincoln–Douglas Debates of 1858 were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate for Senate in Illinois, and the incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate.
